The Hockeyroos See Victory In Penalty Shootout Win

August 3, 2018 by

Australia’s national women’s hockey team has been moved to the semi-final after an intense battle with Argentina, one of this season’s best teams. The quarter-finals match pushed into penalty territory after both teams finished the game on a scoreless draw.

Both Argentina and Australia have played strong defence in this year’s World Cup, with Australia only conceding a total of three goals in their three pool matches, while Argentina have only had to concede one goal in their last few matches.

After they met in the field, it didn’t take long for both teams to enter a stalemate, and that the deciding factor would be down to a penalty shootout.

A long battle between the two teams in both the first and second halves of the game saw no goals as goalkeepers Rachael Lynch and Belen Succi held their posts against all attacks. The game ended with a 0-0 draw, and went into overtime for the shootout. Lynch once again proved her mettle after she blocked Magdalena Fernandez the chance to win it for her team, but sudden death quickly came into effect after the teams could no longer be split into five attempts each.

Jodie Kenny of the Hockeyroos managed to earn a 3-3 for the Aussies with a penalty stroke that was landed after Succi made a few successful denials. Australian forward Brooke Peris scored the winning goals for her team after the match had moved into sudden death, pushing the score to a total of 4-3, and allowing Australia into the semi-finals.
