Jamie McLaren, a striker for Australia, has been called up to join the team for the preliminary games leading up to the World Cup. This has been in response to the team losing Tomi Juric who has had to leave due to fitness concerns.
Bert van Marwijk, head coach issued a statement confirming McLaren’s joining their training camp in Turkey just as the final squad selection was announced.
Van Marwijk has told reporters that Tomi Juric suffered from a knee problem for some weeks prior and was being monitored. He goes on further to explain that Juric’s injury is the reason that the team had to call on McLaren, giving the striker a chance to show off his skills on the field. Some fear Juric’s leaving before the World Cup, as he’s proven himself to be a talented and dedicated member of the Socceroos.
At the moment, there are 27 players part of the training camp, but only 23 of them will be able to attend the actual World Cup games. The deadline for the 23 that will make it will be announced at a later date in the early days of June.
Part of their upcoming events includes a friendly game against the Czech Republic, where the Socceroos can test out their tactics and teamwork. The game is set to be played in Australia, and will take place before the final team selection of the squad for Russia is to be announced.
