Key Details About the Coolmore Stud Stakes
Raced on one of the biggest days of the calendar, Victoria Derby Day, the Coolmore Stud Stakes has a long and rich history. This is a race only for 3YOs and is run over a distance of 1,200m at Flemington Racecourse.
The Coolmore Stud Stakes was originally known as the Ascot Vale Stakes and was first run back in 1863. For a lot of the Coolmore Stud Stakes’ history, it was run during the Autumn Racing Carnival, not the Spring Racing Carnival like it is currently.
In the early days, the race was contested over a distance of five furlongs (so about 1,100m). However, ever since 1872, the Coolmore Stud Stakes has been contested over a distance of six furlongs, or 1,200m. Also, up until 1965, the Coolmore Stud Stakes was a race for 2YOs, but it is now a race exclusively for 3YOs.
There was a switch in 2006 which saw the Coolmore Stud Stakes and the Danehill Stakes races swap race days. The Coolmore Stud Stakes was also granted Group One status this year after holding Group Two status.

Before you finalise your best for the Coolmore Stud Stakes, we have a few tips to help make the experience a more enjoyable one:
- Find Bonuses & Promotions - Different betting sites will offer varying promotions for the Coolmore Stud Stakes, so it can pay to shop around and see what’s available. While it is important to search for the best odds, looking for the best odds and promotions can increase the overall value of your bet.
- Don’t Overcommit - It’s important that you have a plan before you start betting and that you stick with it throughout the day. Think about what your monetary limit is. For example, if your limit is $100, then it probably isn’t a good idea to stake $80 on your first bet of the day.
- Look at Live Yard Details - Looking into the form guide is always recommended, but something people can forget to do is look into the live yard. Before runners make their way onto the racecourse, they will be in the mounting yard. This is a great time to see how each horse is looking before the race.
- Don’t Ignore Value - While it may be easy to stick with the favourite, you shouldn’t simply ignore any potential value. The favourite might be so short that there isn’t much value betting on them, and this is where looking for value can really come into play.

Best Odds for the Coolmore Stud Stakes
You could stick with your usual bookie when it comes to betting on the Coolmore Stud Stakes, but you may be missing out on the best odds. While you may not think it makes that much of a difference, it really does all add up in the end, especially if you regularly bet on roughies, where the odds discrepancy can be a lot larger.
If you decide to take the time and go on the hunt for the best odds, you’ll be pleased to know it isn’t really that difficult a process. There are odds comparison tools that can help speed up the process even further, but they are limited. So, we also recommend manually checking around for the best odds.
