Key Details About the Golden Slipper

The Golden Slipper is one of the biggest highlights of the entire year of racing, and it takes centre stage during the Autumn Racing Carnival. Each year, we see some of the best 2YOs step out to show the racing community what they’ve got. With $5 million in prize money on the line, the Golden Slipper is the richest race for 2YOs in Australia.

The race is run each year at Rosehill Racecourse and is mentioned in the same breath as races like the Melbourne Cup, Cox Plate and Caulfield Cup. The Golden Slipper was first contested back in 1957 and was worth £20,000. George Ryder, who was the Sydney Turf Club chairman at the time, came up with the concept for the Golden Slipper.

Golden Slipper Day is one of the biggest days of racing throughout the year. Races like the Ranvet Stakes, Rosehill Guineas, The Galaxy and George Ryder Stakes all take place on the same day. The race is currently scheduled in mid-March, which is two weeks before The Championships kick off at Randwick Racecourse.

The Golden Slipper hasn’t always been run on this day, though, and there have been multiple date chances for the race. Before 2008, the race was held the week before Good Friday. In 2008, the Golden Slipper was held four weeks after Easter. Between 2009 and 2014, the race was contested on the first Saturday in April.

Best Odds for the Golden Slipper

Finding the best odds for the Golden Slipper doesn’t have to be a drawn-out process, and in the end, you could get more bang for your buck. So, if you have a smidge of time before the big race, it’s highly recommended that you shop around for the best odds, and you can lock in the highest payout potential.

Sometimes you’ll find that different betting sites will offer different prices for the same runner/ market, so you should keep an eye on the going price for the bet you’re interested in. While the differences may not be that large, every little bit helps. Also, if you’re betting regularly, this can add up pretty quickly.

For those who like betting on roughies or markets with higher odds, we also find that the difference in odds between bookies can be larger. This means that shopping around can have more impact on your potential payout. You can take advantage of an odds comparison tool to speed up the process.

An odds comparison tool can also eliminate some of the manual work. However, it is important to note that some tools won’t include the odds across all the bookies you’re interested in, and most only display fixed win/ place odds. So, a little bit of manual work may be required to ensure you’re getting the best odds possible for the Golden Slipper.
