Key Details About the Railway Stakes

After the thrills and spills of the Spring Racing Carnival in Melbourne and Sydney, all attention turns to Perth to close out the year. Due to the distance, we don’t usually see horses from the East Coast make their way to Perth.

However, this all changes during their racing carnival as there are three key Group One races spread across three weeks at Ascot Racecourse, starting with the Railway Stakes. After the Railway Stakes, we have the Winterbottom Stakes and then wrap things up with the Northerly Stakes.

The Railway Stakes is run over a distance of 1,600m, and it has been run at this distance for around 100 years. From 1972 to 1983, the race was shortened and run over a distance of 1,500m. The race was first run in 1887, and it was won by Nimrod. In 2017, we saw an upgrade in prize money.

The race was previously run on the same day as the Perth Cup, which takes place on New Year’s Day. In 2001, the Railway Stakes was rescheduled and moved to November to join other races as part of the Perth Racing Carnival.

Railway Stakes Tips & Best Bets

Each year, we provide our horse racing tips for the Railway Stakes a couple of days out from the event. The team at Australianbettingsites.net.au provides tips for all the major races on the calendar, like Melbourne Cup tips, Caulfield Cup tips, The Everest tips and Queen Elizabeth Stakes tips, for example.

On top of the tips on some of the major Group One races, we also provide daily horse racing tips. This covers some of the biggest races that occur each day and includes our most confident plays of the day. We utilise multiple different bet types, so there is certainly something for everyone.

If you’re thinking of betting on the Railway Stakes and want to make it an enjoyable experience, we have some tips and tricks for you:

  • Recent Form of Runner - Runners that are coming into the Railway Stakes on a winning streak must be seriously considered. However, it is important not to just take the results at face value. A runner might be held up at a critical stage, but finish strongly for a lower placing, for example.
  • Class Level of Race - The class of the race will indicate how difficult it is likely to be. For example, Group One races are the most competitive and the pinnacle of racing. So, it’s a good idea to not only look at the recent form and results of each runner, but also the level of race they have been competing in.
  • Understanding of Odds - The odds will give you an indication of which runners a certain bookie thinks are more likely to win the race. This is only an indication, and the favourite doesn’t always win. So, it can pay to look around and see if you can find some value with other runners in the field.
  • Multiple Bookies - You may have your favourite bookie, but it can pay to try out others. Different betting sites have slightly different offerings, and this could include different odds and promotions. Betting sites bonuses can actually vary greatly, and it’s an extra way to pick up more value.

Best Odds for the Railway Stakes

This is the main goal of every bettor. If you’re not looking for the best odds, you are potentially missing out on extra value, basically something for nothing if your bet is successful. The process of finding the best odds can sometimes require some manual work, but it isn’t as time-consuming as you may think.

When looking for the best odds, it’s a good idea to stick with the bookies you already have an account with, as this speeds up the process. If you don’t have accounts with multiple bookies, consider branching out because not only can you find different odds, but there will also be different promotions to take advantage of.

We find that different bookies may offer varying odds for the same runner and/ or market. So, shopping around means you can lock in the best odds going around. While you might not think it will make that much of a difference to your hip pocket, it all adds up in the end. Also, if you’re betting on roughies, the difference in odds can be more sizable.

Use an odds comparison tool to limit the amount of manual work required, and the whole process might only end up taking you a few minutes. So, if you have a little bit of time to spare before the Railway Stakes, we certainly recommend having a shop around. Start with bookies that are known for offering the most competitive odds in the market.

Latest Railway Stakes Results

It was a day for the roughies in the Railway Stakes as we saw Port Lockroy, a $9.00 chance, claim victory. Port Lockroy was ridden by Clint Johnston-Porter, jumped from barrier seven, and only had to carry 53kg on his back.

Finishing in second place was Comfort Me, who was paying a whopping $41 to win the Railway Stakes at the jump. The gelding was steered by Holly Watson and ended up finishing 0.73L off the leader. Filling in the final minor placings was Super Smink, who jumped wide and finished 0.76L off the pace.
