Key Details About the Stradbroke Handicap

The Stradbroke Handicap is one of the biggest races held each year in Queensland, and we always see some of the best sprinters head to Eagle Farm Racecourse for their shot at glory. The race has been running since 1890, making it one of the oldest races in Australian history.

The inaugural race was won by Pyrrhus, and it was originally raced over the 1,200m (approx.) mark, back when Australia used the imperial system. In 1972, the distance of the race was updated to 1,400m, which is the distance we know it today.

In the 2014-15 season of racing, the Stradbroke Handicap was moved to Doomben Racecourse due to reconstruction. This also resulted in a slight change to the distance of the race, from 1,400m down to 1,350m, to suit the Doomben Racecourse configuration.

The Stradbroke Handicap is named in honour of Lord Stradbroke, who was a relative of Henry John Rous. Henry John Rous brought the weight-for-age scale into horse racing. Between 1982 and 1988, the Stradbroke Handicap was known as the Elders Handicap.

Best Odds for the Stradbroke Handicap

On the surface, it may seem like a time-consuming process to shop around for the best Stradbroke Handicap odds. However, this isn’t the case, and there are a few recommendations we have for you to make the process even more streamlined.

Why shop around in the first place? Well, it is well known that different bookies may offer different odds for the same runner/ market. While the difference may only be minor, it all adds up in the end. Also, if you’re betting on exotics or roughies, the odds difference between bookies is usually higher.

So, how can you speed up the process? One of the first things we recommend is to use an odds comparison tool. These tools can be really helpful because all the fixed win/ place odds are listed in one place across multiple betting sites.

The tool might not include odds from all your favourite bookies, though. So, a little bit of manual work may be required, but the level of work is a lot less compared to if you didn’t use this tool. Another good option is to stick with bookies that have a reputation for offering competitive odds all the time, like Unibet, for example.

Latest Stradbroke Handicap Results

The pre-race favourite, War Machine, was able to get the job done, carrying just 53kg and jumping from barrier 12. Yellow Brick, who was going around with odds of $41 (and $11 to place), finished in second place, just 0.76L.

The Joseph Pride-trained Private Eye filled in the final minor placing, 1.8L off War Machine, after jumping from barrier nine. In the end, there was a total of 11.93L that split the first and last runners across the finishing post, and the race was run in a time of 1:21.17.
