Key Details About the Winterbottom Stakes
After the Spring Racing Carnival winds down in Melbourne and Sydney, it’s Perth’s turn to take the spotlight. Perth’s Spring Racing Carnival features three key Group One races over three weeks, the Railway Stakes, Winterbottom Stakes and Northerly Stakes. The Winterbottom Stakes takes place during the middle week of the carnival.
The Winterbottom Stakes was first run back in 1952 and won by a horse called Raconteur. Since 1952, the Winterbottom Stakes has turned into one of the biggest and prestigious sprint races in Australia. The race is currently contested over a distance of 1,200m; however, it was previously run across 1,400m until 1994.
While the Winterbottom Stakes currently holds Group One status, this wasn’t always the case. The race held Group Two status from 1979 until 2011, and in 2011 it was upgraded to a Group One. In 2015, the prize money of the Winterbottom Stakes was increased to $1 million.
Now, this great race boasts a prize money pot of $1.5 million, with the winner taking home the largest portion of that cash. The Winterbottom Stakes is raced under weight-for-age (WFA) conditions and is for runners 3YO and older. The weight each runner must carry depends on a few different factors, like their age (obviously) and sex, for example.
Winterbottom Stakes Tips & Best Bets
One thing that most are probably looking for is horse racing tips. Well, you’ve come to the right place as the team at Australianbettingsites.net.au provides tips and best bets for the Winterbottom Stakes and other key Group One races each year. On top of this, we offer daily horse racing tips, so there’s always something to check out.
No matter the race, from Caulfield Cup tips to Melbourne Cup tips, our best bets will be available a couple of days out from the event. We take the time to go through every runner in the field, analyse their chances of success based on data and provide our top plays for the race.
To make your Winterbottom Stakes betting experience more enjoyable, we have developed a set of tips and tricks for you to follow:
- Don’t Ignore the Favourite - While you shouldn’t blindly follow the favourite, you shouldn’t ignore it either. The favourite is usually the favourite for a reason, so look into the data behind the odds and determine whether there is value in betting on the favourite, or if there is a more suitable play elsewhere.
- Try Multiple Bookies - Having an account with multiple different betting sites can be beneficial for several different reasons. Firstly, it is easier to take advantage of the best odds going around for the market/ runner you want to bet on. Secondly, different bookies may have varying promotions, which you can easily take advantage of.
- Read the Form Guide - If you don’t read the form guide, it’s basically like throwing darts at a dartboard, blind. The form guide provides valuable pieces of information like recent results, track/ trip record and more. Looking for key form indicators can also help you find patterns with previous winners.
- Have a Plan - Before things kick off, it’s a good idea to have a plan in place. Things you should consider are how much money you’re willing to bet today, what types of bets you’re going to make, how much you’re willing to stake on each bet, and more. Having a plan is important, but sticking to it is what makes it work.
Top Betting Sites for the Winterbottom Stakes
With so many new betting sites coming into the Australian market each year, it can be difficult to know which one is best for you. Each betting site has a slightly different offering, and we have experience with pretty much all of them. Over the years, we have developed a list of the best horse racing betting sites for you to choose from.
Bet365
You can’t really go wrong with Bet365, one of the biggest betting apps in the world. They have kicked off operations in multiple countries around the globe, including Australia. From live streaming to unique promotions, Bet365 is a complete package.
They are well established in Australia, and one of the main reasons they are so popular is their odds. Bet365 consistently offers some of the best horse racing odds. On top of this, the range of markets available for horse racing events is second to none.
Dabble
Compared to Bet365, Dabble is certainly a lot newer, but they aren’t letting that slow them down. In fact, in Dabble’s short history, they have already opened up shop in both America and England. They have one of the most user-friendly betting apps going around.
They changed the face of the industry when they launched a host of social-first betting features, features that other bookies copied! So, if you like the social aspect of betting, like copying others’ bets, chatting with other like-minded bettors, Dabble is a great option.
PlayUp
PlayUp is another that you should seriously consider (if you haven’t already) when it comes to all your horse racing betting needs. The range of horse racing markets is great, and they offer easy form and live yard features on the majority of races.
This makes it even easier for you to find your next potential winner. On top of this, when it comes to betting sites bonuses, PlayUp is right up there. They offer some of the most unique promotions that provide genuine value for bettors.
Unibet
Just like Bet365, Unibet has reach on an international level. With so many resources at their disposal, they can offer their customers some of the best. With Unibet, you have access to live streaming, some of the most competitive horse racing odds and more.
You can toggle between easy form and full form as well, so no matter how experienced you are with racing, Unibet has you covered. Their quick indicators on rating, distance and speed map are another useful feature that can help you make a decision on which runner to back.
Bet Right
Lastly, we have Bet Right. They are quickly making a name for themselves as one of the best horse racing betting sites going around. One of the things we like the most about their racing product is the runner highlights and personalised recommendations.
Bet Right provides valuable information, including horse racing tips, for horse racing events, and they also have some of the most competitive odds going around. Some races even feature a place payout down to four runners (other bookies have the payout to three).

Best Odds for the Winterbottom Stakes
Finding the best odds for the Winterbottom Stakes isn’t going to make or break your bet, but it can mean the difference between more cash in your back pocket if your bet is successful. There are a couple of different ways you can go about finding the best odds, and one of our recommendations is to use an odds comparison tool.
When using an odds comparison tool, you can see all the odds of runners in a particular race (usually fixed win or place odds). With all the odds in one place, it makes it easy to compare and lock in the odds you like. However, the tool might not display the odds across every bookie you like.
If this is the case, a little bit of manual work is required. Manually checking a handful of bookies for the best odds in the Winterbottom Stakes doesn’t take too long, especially if you have a good process in place. While you may think the manual work isn’t worth it, it can really all add up in the end.
On top of this, if you like to bet on roughies, we find the difference between the lowest and highest odds on offer is sometimes much greater. If you want to limit the amount of manual work you have to do, you should stick with bookies that regularly offer the most competitive horse racing odds, like Bet365, Unibet and Bet Right, for example.
