Despite being formed in 1885, the Richmond Tigers were not a founding member of the VFL when it began in 1897, but since joining it 11 years later they have grown into one of the league’s biggest clubs. A period of consistent success through the ‘60s and ‘70s certainly helped, and while they struggled for some time thereafter, the outpouring of support once they found themselves back in the mix demonstrated that this club is still a powerhouse of the league. Though they won only two games in 2024, the Tigers were 4th in the league in members and 5th for average attendance, and if and when they climb back up the AFL ladder, the AFL world will know all about it.

History of the Richmond Tigers
The Richmond Tigers didn’t join the then-VFL until more than a decade after its inception and didn’t win their first Premiership until 1920, but they made up for lost time over the ensuing decades. They enjoyed the ultimate success ten times in 60 years up until 1980, but after feasting for so long, a famine followed. The once-mighty Tigers were horrendously unsuccessful for the next 30-odd years, making the finals just twice between 1982 and 2013, but when it rains it pours and when they finally broke through for a long-awaited 11th Premiership in 2017, it was the first of three in a four-year period.
How to Watch the Richmond Tigers
The Tigers have not enjoyed as many big-game time slots due to their struggles in recent years, but a number of their games are still available on Channel 7 or 7Mate. Every single one of their games is also on Foxtel and Kayo, while if you’re abroad then check out the WatchAFL app.
