Match Analysis
Though Thursday night’s game might not be the most enthralling round-opener we’ve had this season, there is every chance that Friday’s will make up for it. The Lions and the Dogs find themselves firmly entrenched in the Premiership hunt, but while the reigning Premiers are firming their own case over recent weeks, plenty of question marks were raised about the Dogs after last weekend’s defeat.
For Brisbane, three consecutive wins have just been enough to keep the surging Crows at bay and hold onto second, but a gap of a game-and-a-half has now opened up to the chasing pack and a spot in the top 4 is theirs for the taking. They would, however, love to hold onto 2nd and potentially be able to make their way into another Grand Final without having to leave the Gabba, but they can likely only lose a game or two in the run home if they’re to do so.
The Bulldogs, on the other hand, somehow find themselves out of the top 8 after last week’s 11-point loss to the Crows. Prior to that they’d won four on the trot, but this five-week patch has been symptomatic of their season; they have beaten up on teams outside the 8, and struggled against teams in it. Clearly, that’s a major concern for the Premiership ambitions of this talented team, but while their record against top 8 teams is far from ideal, a lot of those games have gone down to the wire, so it’s not as though they aren’t capable. This might just be another case of the same. The forecast rain won’t do the Dogs any favours, but they should still be able to take it right up to the Lions. In a tight tussle, however, the home side might just force the Dogs into another close loss.
