While most of the NRL public’s collective interest is directed at teams in the Premiership or finals mix, a less-publicised battle goes on every year at the other end of the table – a battle that nobody really wants to be involved in. The Wooden Spoon betting market involves punters counting on their knowledge of who really isn’t good, rather than who is, a domain in which the Wests Tigers have excelled in recent years by finishing with the least wins in three consecutive years. There appears likely to be a changing of the guard this season, but while the Titans are now the runaway favourites to finish bottom, it’s a close ladder and there are plenty of teams not far ahead of them.

Latest Odds: NRL Least Wins Market
Below are the latest odds in the NRL Wooden Spoon betting market. Interestingly, there is a lot of disharmony among different betting sites (which we love!), with big differences in the odds of a number of teams across different agencies, as you can see below.
A quick note: there is a subtle difference in the way some betting sites frame this market. While PlayUp and EliteBet have it listed as ‘Least Wins’, Bet365 goes for ‘Most Losses’, which could theoretically have a different result if draws are involved, though the vast majority of the time it won’t make a difference.
Top Wooden Spoon Contenders
Gold Coast Titans
Since winning two of their first three games, the 2025 season has been something of a train wreck for the Titans. They would go on to lose nine of their next 11 games, establishing themselves firmly on the bottom of the ladder and as virtually the only team in the league without even an outside finals chance.
Offensively they’ve been poor but at least have been a little more potent than a handful of other teams, but their defence could hardly stop an under 12s team and has conceded the most points in the league at the time of writing. Things aren’t likely to get any better in a hurry and they well and truly deserve clear favouritism in this market, though given they are still relatively close to multiple teams above them their odds in this market are fairly short.
Bet on the Titans to win the Wooden Spoon at $1.90 with Bet365
Parramatta Eels
The Eels for a long time looked like the Titans major contenders in the NRL Wooden Spoon 2025 race, winning just two of their first seven games and locking themselves in the bottom two. But three wins in five games through May and June saw them catapult all the way up to, well, 15th, but still – there’s no denying the improved form they displayed during that period.
Their previously pitiful offence came to life, averaging 31.3 points per games in those wins, just about bang on double the 15.7 they averaged in the other 11 games to that point. An extensive injury list is set to shorten in coming weeks, too, so while they’re no world beaters there should at least be some optimism that they can snare enough wins to avoid bottom spot.
Bet on the Eels to win the Wooden Spoon at $7.00 with Bet365
Wests Tigers
The poor old Tigers have ‘won’ three consecutive Wooden Spoons, but a bunch of very handy off-season acquisitions meant a fourth was always going to be unlikely. A 5-4 start to the year just about got them to their most wins since 2021 already, but five consecutive losses thereafter put a bit of a handbrake on their season.
Still, it’s not as though they’ve been playing badly. The last three games of that losing streak were all just four-point defeats, a couple of them against some pretty good teams. The unlikely finals run which seemed possible after their start might now be a bit of a stretch, but this team should be too good to be finishing bottom again.
Bet on the Tigers to win the Wooden Spoon at $8.00 with PlayUp
Team-by-Team Wooden Spoon Outlook
St. George Illawarra Dragons
The Dragons are realistically not the worst team in the league, but they’re hard to get too excited about. They found themselves 5-6 and right on the edge of the eight after their first 11 games, but an embarrassing 50-point loss to the Dolphins was followed by a 12-point defeat at the hands of the Sharks to send them to 5-8. That left them still just a couple of games clear of the Titans, but there are better value teams in this market.
Bet on the Dragons to win the Wooden Spoon at $11.00 with Bet365
Newcastle Knights
The Knights got off to a bad start with five losses from their first seven games, but they have to some extent righted the ship thereafter. Incredibly, after that start they alternated wins and losses for eight consecutive weeks, a run which still left their record at a relatively paltry 6-9 but which got them a little way off bottom spot. They’re not a great team but really shouldn’t be finishing last either, and it’s hard to imagine them doing so unless something dramatic happens, such as a long-term Kalyn Ponga injury.
Bet on the Knights to win the Wooden Spoon at $11.00 with PlayUp
North Queensland Cowboys
The Cowboys have been as erratic as just about anyone for years now, and that’s continued this season. After a slow start they hit some strong form, but a dreadful run of late which has largely coincided with Jason Taumololo’s absence saw them fall to 5-1-8. Their three consecutive losses to start June certainly looked like the performances of a potential Wooden Spooner; their aggregate score in those was a ridiculous 138-26, with an average losing margin of over 37 points. They’ll probably bounce back at some point, but a couple more weeks of that could see the wheels start to fall off and their odds in this market shorten.
Bet on the Cowboys to win the Wooden Spoon at $15.00 with Bet365
South Sydney Rabbitohs
The Rabbitohs’ theoretically look like value at the time of writing – particularly at the odds of $26 with Bet365 – given they’re sitting in second last, but that will likely change very quickly. The incredibly tight nature of the ladder means that they are somehow only two games behind fifth, and the four consecutive losses that saw them fall to 16th literally came against the top four – and three of them by six points or less. The Bunnies are a decent team despite that recent stretch, and should be able to peel themselves away from the bottom of the ladder.

Predictions: Who Will Finish Last?
It’s a really interesting Wooden Spoon race this season with nearly every team in the league relatively competitive, and there is a reason the Titans sit at the top of the pile as the comfortable favourites. At less than $2 with this far to go in the season and a relatively small gap between them and numerous other teams, there isn’t a huge amount of value, but they have consistently looked like the worst team in it this season and look more likely than not to stay stuck in bottom spot. They’re my pick despite the relatively short odds.
If you’re after a bit of value there are certainly options, because if the Titans get it together the team that finishes last could easily have eight wins or so. Based on their recent form, the standout value pick for me is the Cowboys at $15 with Bet365. They’ve been dreadful of late, and while their best is too good to finish last, if they lose touch with the top eight they could easily lose their heads and just stumble to the end of the season.
Expert Tips for Wooden Spoon Betting
Below are some Wooden Spoon betting tips to keep in mind when punting on this market.
- Factor in the state of the league: This year is a great example of the idea that not all Wooden Spooners are made equal. While the Tigers finished last with four wins in 2022 and 2023, this season last spot could easily have double that, so while some teams might not look bad enough to finish last, they still could.
- Injury list: As in all sports, injuries play a key role, and if a team loses a couple of big players and finals fall out of the picture, they can easily spiral.
- ‘Least Wins’ vs ‘Most Losses’: I mentioned this earlier, but some bookies frame this market differently. Least wins and most losses are not exactly the same thing and can have a different result if draws are involved, though this is rare.
