What are Group 1 Races?
There are so many Group 1 races in Australia that we are truly spoiled for choice. In fact, July is the only month of the year that doesn’t currently include any Group One races. There is a status system in Australia that classifies races, and Group 1 is the highest status.
In Australia, we have Listed Races, Group 3, Group 2 and Group 1 races. These Group 1 races have the highest amount of prize money attached to them and therefore attract the highest quality field possible.
On top of this, there are several Group 1 races in Australia that are exempt from the ballot for other races. For example, if a runner wins the Caulfield Cup, they can compete in the Melbourne Cup if they wish.
Group 1 Races Statistics
When it comes to Australian Group 1 races, there are some pretty unique statistics that are interesting to know. Some of the key statistics include:
- There are almost 100 races each year, with Melbourne and Sydney hosting the most Group 1 races out of any other state.
- The smallest amount of prize money on the line is $750,000, and the largest amount is $20,000,000.
- The most popular time of the year is Spring, when the Melbourne and Sydney Spring Racing Carnivals take place.
- On the Group 1 races calendar, there are 13 races in October and November.
