The obvious top pick in the 2025 Caulfield Cup has to be Half Yours. The gelding is the clear favourite, with the next shortest runner listed with odds of $9.00. This will be the 5YOs' second attempt at Group One level, but he will only carry 52.5kg on his back, which is a massive advantage, especially when jumping from barrier two.

With a current career record of 14: 6-3-0, Half Yours seems to be going from strength to strength. His first Group One attempt was last time out in the Turnbull Stakes, when he wasn’t disgraced, finishing fourth out of 14 runners. In his run before that, also at Caulfield, he dominated in the Group Three Naturalism Stakes, winning by 3.5L.

Analysis:

When there is a heavy favourite, it usually means there’s heaps of value elsewhere, and Meydaan looks like a great each-way play at the price. Meydaan makes his way to Australia, and this will be his first run this prep Down Under. The gelding has back-to-back placings in Group Three races, and this will be his first attempt at Group One level. 

The form in the September Stakes, which was his last run, has stood up, and it’s hard to see the 5YO running a bad race. I’m expecting some natural improvement as well, and he has performed well across this trip. Jumping from barrier five is another big tick. He is from the same team that brought out West Wind Blows, who finished second in this race in 2023.

Analysis:

If you’re looking for another worthwhile value option, Vauban is the perfect candidate. The four-time Group One winner is another who has been going through the gears nicely, and he looks like both the Caulfield Cup and Melbourne Cup are his prime targets. At around the $3.30 mark just to run top-three, there’s a lot of value around him.

The 8YO will have to lug around the top weight, but after an unlucky run last time out, hopefully, he will get some luck this time out. He should settle in reasonably well from barrier 13 and look for the right breaks at the right time. He is one of the most experienced runners in the field, and if he runs well here, look to get on him as well for the Melbourne Cup.
