Analysis:

While there are a few live chances in the 2025 Cox Plate, it is pretty difficult to go past the favourite, Via Sistina. She hasn’t won since the Winx Stakes back in August, but I would say that trainer Chris Waller has her peaking at the right time. James McDonald saddles up again, and he is aiming for Cox Plate victories in a row.

JMac also has an excellent record on board Via Sistina (11:7-1-2). The multiple Group One winner dominated this race last year, winning by eight lengths. This time out, it might be a little more difficult, but she certainly has the class factor, and she’s good enough to win this one again.

8. Aeliana

Analysis:

Going with another Chris Waller-trained mare for the Cox Plate, this time with Aeliana, who is going around at very respectable each-way odds. She’s followed the same path at Via Sistina so far this prep, going from the Winx Stakes to the Makybe Diva Stakes, and then the Turnbull Stakes last time out.

Her first two runs this prep resulted in back-to-back second placings. In the Turnbull Stakes, she gave a good chase in the closing stages, but ended up in fifth spot. For the Cox Plate, she gets in well at the weights, which could prove all the difference. There is a little bit of an unknown as she hasn’t raced at the track, but there is value around her that’s too good to pass up.

4. Buckaroo

Analysis:

For my best roughie of the Cox Plate, I’m siding with Buckaroo. The gelding has finished in the top three in all three of his Group One runs so far this prep (including the Memsie Stakes, Underwood Stakes and Might and Power Stakes). Play it safe and take him to run top-three (hopefully, there aren’t any more scratchings). 

The distance is the query for Buckaroo, as he hasn’t won in nine attempts, but he has finished second twice and third on three occasions. He’ll probably need a bit of luck and an excellent steer from Mark Zahra, but he is another that I just can’t ignore at the price. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him finish in the top three or even win this one.
