Analysis:

I have to put the favourite on top for this one, who managed to win the Moonee Valley Vase last weekend. He was the favourite for that one too and seems to be going through the gears nicely. He is the clear top-rated runner in the Victoria Derby and has already placed at Group One level.

That placing came two runs back in the Caulfield Guineas, where he finished third as a $20 chance. Mark Zahra, who was on board for the victory last time out, retains the ride, and the pair have a record of 3:2-1-0 together. The step up from 2,040m to 2,500m shouldn’t be an issue. Observer might be getting on the skinny side of things in terms of the odds, so take the $2.15 while you can.

3. Autumn Mystery

Analysis:

On paper, the barrier draw looks like a complete horror show, but Autumn Mystery will likely settle back anyway, so barrier 17 should set off as many alarm bells. The Autumn Sun gelding has been crunched in the odds as well, opening at $18, but the $10/$3.30 we are getting for each-way odds is still very worthwhile.

He is looking to complete the hat-trick after winning the Victoria Derby Preview two runs back and then the Caulfield Classic last time out. He already has an impressive overall record of 9:2-2-2, and Black Shinn is two from two on the 3YO. He has never contested the 2,500m before, but considering his previous runs, we can see the stamina he has in the bank.

Analysis:

Options is going around at borderline silly odds in my eyes. Seriously, $15 for the colt to win? You can take him as an each-way play, but I’ll be keeping things safe, taking him to place. He finished fifth last time out at Moonee Valley in The Vase, but he wasn’t afforded much luck in that one, and the track layout was working against him.

Even though he has never raced at Flemington in his short career, it does seem like a more suitable track. All he needs is a smidge of luck, and he should be in this up to his eyeballs. Harry Coffey retains the ride, and the pair have a 5:3-0-1 record together. He jumps from barrier seven, so look for him to settle back and hopefully the gaps open up around the bend.
