The fourth at Ballarat looks to be somewhat of an open contest, and I think I’ve found the best value with African Pioneer. We last saw the gelding at the same track in mid-June, and he won that one by 0.2L. The runner-up in that race has since gone on to win, so the form checks out.

In another open race, I’m willing to take a chance on Amarone, who is currently going around at decent place odds, so I think I’ll be playing it safe. The gelding had his first run in 26 weeks last time out, which resulted in a fourth place at Muswellbrook, less than a length off the pace. He will be fitter for that run under his belt.

Going against the favourite here with Cool Charlie, who was amongst the placegetters last time out, finishing second at Wangaratta. The 4YO has already won at Ballarat this prep, and that win came across the same distance as well. There’s a lot to like with Cool Charlie in what looks like another fairly open race.
